INDIANAPOLIS — Jets fans, buckle up. The ongoing quarterback carousel in New York took another spin when General Manager Darren Mougey addressed the media at the NFL Combine, insisting the team never issued any ultimatums to Aaron Rodgers.

Instead, Mougey says he and head coach Aaron Glenn decided it was simply time to move forward.

“A lot of respect for Aaron Rodgers as a player and a person—first-ballot Hall of Famer, no question,” Mougey said. “But we made this decision and are looking ahead to free agency and the draft.”

Parting Ways with a Legend

Two weeks ago, the Jets told the 41-year-old Rodgers they were ready to move on. The four-time MVP, who’s also one of only five NFL quarterbacks to eclipse 500 career touchdown passes, still has a year left on his contract at a non-guaranteed $37.5 million.

The Jets originally acquired Rodgers from Green Bay in April 2023, hoping he’d be the missing piece to end a Super Bowl drought dating back to the legendary Joe Namath and the 1968 season. But Rodgers’ first year in New York was nothing short of disastrous: after tearing his left Achilles just four snaps into his debut, the Jets’ championship dreams nosedived.

Rodgers did return for the most recent season, starting every game—but the offense never found its rhythm. The Jets ended with a 5-12 record, leaving fans frustrated and the front office searching for answers.

What About Davante Adams?

The Rodgers drama isn’t the only question mark in New York. Wide receiver Davante Adams is on track to earn $35.64 million each of the next two seasons. With Rodgers out of the picture, the Jets might ask Adams to restructure—or potentially part ways. Adams himself hinted that his own future could be tied to Rodgers’ plans.

Looking Ahead

For a franchise craving a return to glory, the next few weeks could be pivotal. The Jets will be navigating free agency, the draft, and potentially more high-profile roster moves. One thing is clear: Darren Mougey and Aaron Glenn are ready to turn the page, and Jets fans everywhere are hoping the next chapter finally brings them back to Super Bowl contention.
